Which college degrees will give you the best chances of finding a job after graduation? Some students select a major because it offers practical skills that are valuable in the workplace. Other students choose their major because they enjoy the subject material. In the design field, building a portfolio of your work is the single-most important step in defining yourself as a creative artist. Every course you select should help you add to your skills. Don't aim to commercialize your efforts too soon, but rather focus on pushing your limits and learning new techniques. The most popular college major is business administration, split equally between men and women. On the other hand, men make up the large majority of computer science and engineering majors. For women, the fields of education, English and liberal arts dominate the list.

Students can enhance their regular schedule by adding online classes. Distance education enables students who cannot make the commute to campus to have access to accredited courses. Advanced Placement exams are offered in a variety of subjects, offering college credit for classes that you have done well in. Test yourself with free practice exams, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests. If you earn a score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam, you may be able to receive advanced placement in college.

Online Courses - MOOCs

Eastern Illinois University video editingThe best college for a student is not necessarily the highest ranking in the Forbes or US News listings, but the college that offers a student the most rewarding career chances. If you stay true to your career interests, not just going after salary, your overall job earnings will increase over time as you gain experience. If you focus your degree choices on salary alone, there's greater risk that you'll suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular, four-year college, and you may earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. By taking some of your degree courses online, you also may be able to graduate earlier, saving money on tuition. If you're currently employed, you can take online courses in your spare time to advance your present career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing cloud-based software and Google apps.

An online degree may be just as marketable as a college degree earned on campus. Udemy online learning, a site which allows anyone to take online courses, is a new startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Khan Academy now offers over 3,900 micro-lectures available via YouTube. Coursera, another online-learning software platform, has millions of enrolled students around the world. Recently, MIT made it's open courseware platform available to students and instructors at no cost.

Graphic Design Jobs - Listings

Although most jobs which pay six-figure salaries require a college degree, starting salaries in technical fields are based more on ability than which college you attended. The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits about 300 colleges with programs in in studio art, computerized design, commercial graphics, and website design. Art directors are responsible for the layout of pages, and design of images in magazines, newspapers, product packaging, and movies. They create the overall 'look' of a work, and also manage teams of assistants, who carry out their commands.

Graphic designers create visual concepts, by hand or using computer software, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers. They help to make an organization recognizable by selecting color, images, or logo designs that represent a particular idea or identity to be used in advertising and promotions. About 29 percent of graphic designers are self-employed, and work as freelance commercial artists.

In order to become an RN (Registered Nurse), a bachelors degree in nursing is recommended. RN's command a greater salary, and are responsible for an enlarged scope of practice over LPNs and CNAs. Students will receive classroom instruction and clinical training in a hospital setting. A 4-year BSN program allows students to further specialize in the areas of pediatrics, geriatrics and mental health. After completing your nursing education, you must be licensed by the state in which you'll be practicing, given that state boards of nursing each have specific certification requirements.
